This is probably noise at this point, but this was exactly the movie it set out to be. Of course I liked it, but what is more… my wife liked it.
Here’s why that is important. My wife is not into superhero movies. Don’t get me wrong, she has seen them all, and even stayed past the end of the credits for each and every Marvel movie since we started dating. That said, she has endured quite a lot in the name of love. (Which is OK, because I sat through New Moon… twice.)
That being said, perhaps it was during Thor 2 when I realized she had probably peaked on the genre.
It was during that point where Thor and Loki are hanging out that I looked over and saw my beautiful bride fast asleep. Now, I am just going to make this point clear, I don’t know how anyone can not be permanently enthralled by the beauty and spender that is Chris Hemsworth. I’m just saying, if Jennie were to want it, she’d get a pass with that one. I’m not saying it would happen, but if it did… well, if my wife is good enough for that dude, what’s that say about me, am I right?
But regardless of that, Jennie was out. Later, I asked her about it and she was very matter of fact in letting me know that she was just tired of the super hero movies. They were sort of all the same at this point.
Deadpool, however, was not that. It was adult, sure, but it was funny. It made fun of the genre, so oddly, she could identify with the character in that. You take the plot, or the villains, or the whatever else, and that doesn’t really matter. She liked that finally there was something that existed that could make fun of the ever growing “gritworship” and nonstop spectacle in the modern super hero films, probably sent down a forever declining pit of angst and self-loathing by the Nolan Batman series. It seems that gone are the days of the delightfully quirky do-gooder by means of Tobey Maguire, who was so adorable in the role that we just all collectively pretended the movie Brothers never happened.
And then Batman happened, and if a superhero movie today literally doesn’t kill off an entire city, you didn’t do the film right. Well, Deadpool doesn’t do that. It takes a fun check at the industry and allows far more people to get into it, simply because they don’t like superhero movies. The industry has needed a film to come along which hold’s the mirror up to the rest of them and pull the industry out the spectacle race that has quite simply grown paradoxically too stale to enjoy with the same old-same old, and also too much with the constant creep of over the top spectacle.
On top of all the other epic reviews of Deadpool, here’s mine. If you love the comics, you will love Deadpool, because like so many have said, they really got this one right. If you have never read the comic, or any comics, and are tired of seeing movies about comics you haven’t read… also see the movie.
